This unique cross-cultural, post punk hip hop classic was originally written & recorded by Afrika Bambaataa & John Lydon under the name of "Time Zone" in 1984. I have always wanted to cover it but the time was never right until now.
This 2020 remake features U.K. vocalist extraordinaire Paul Catten (Dead Sheeran, Barrabus, Murder One, Lazarus Blackstar, Medulla Nocte) on guest vocals. Over the last 20 years, Paul has previously toured with my rock band My Ruin in his various metal & experimental electronic incarnations and I couldn't have thought of anyone more perfect to pay homage to the vocal stylings of the ex Sex Pistol. We kept his parts true to form because the original lyrics were still fitting for this era.
Afrika Bambaataa is one of the architects of hip hop. I step into his vocal role of this track with great respect to what he has brought to the culture. I can still remember the first time I heard this song and how important it's message was at the time.
Today, we're facing a new crisis. Covid-19 has killed hundreds of thousands of people and infected millions as the numbers continue to rise worldwide but especially in the United States where we are sadly number #1 in deaths due to our lack of leadership. In America, Police brutality and the murdering of unarmed black men & women is at an all time high and racism is rampant. With this in mind, I decided to re-write some of Afrika's lyrics to invoke our current conditions in 2020 with a nod to the old school lyrical content while keeping the sentiment as timeless as the original track. Hopefully we did it the justice it deserves.
